Anutin welcomes Thaksin’s release, says meeting is certain
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said today that he would “certainly” find an opportunity to meet former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was recently released on parole.
Anutin said he was pleased for Thaksin and his family, noting that he had once served in Thaksin’s administration.
“As I have said before, I used to be one of Thaksin’s former subordinates, so I am happy for him and his family… We have all seen reports and images of him returning home smiling and happy,” Anutin said.
The prime minister said Thaksin should be given time and privacy to adjust to life with his family while also dealing with pending legal procedures.
When asked whether he would personally meet Thaksin, Anutin immediately replied, “Certainly.”
He said such a meeting would not be unusual, given their long-standing acquaintance and mutual respect, adding: “Bangkok is not that big. Meeting someone you know and respect is nothing unusual.”
On the political atmosphere following Thaksin’s release, Anutin urged people to remain positive and focus on working honestly for the country and in the public interest.
“There is nothing to worry about if our actions benefit tens of millions of people. Even if mistakes are made, we must accept responsibility. That, in itself, can still be considered an honour,” he said.
