Thai military seeks release of Surin man held in Cambodia
The Thai military is trying to secure the release of a Thai man suspected of being held by Cambodian authorities after he accidentally ventured into Cambodian territory while searching for forest products near the border opposite Kab Choeng district in Surin province.
Fifty-eight-year-old Yote Sainoi was reported by his family to have left home in Prasat district on April 25 to search for forest products in Kab Choeng district near the Cambodian border. He did not return home and has not been seen since, prompting the family to file a missing person report with Kab Choeng police on April 29.
On May 5, the police sought help from the Suranaree Task Force in locating Yote, who is believed to have been detained by Cambodian troops.
The task force then contacted its Cambodian counterpart in O Smach and was told that a Thai man had been arrested for trespassing into Cambodian territory and had already been taken to Oddar Meanchey province for prosecution.
The Cambodian military has confirmed that Yote is alive and safe, but is facing charges of illegal entry.
