Ex-US ambassador DeSombre nominated as assistant secretary for East Asia

US President Donald Trump announced Tuesday he will nominate former ambassador to Thailand Michael DeSombre, as the next assistant secretary of state for East Asia and the Pacific.

DeSombre served as the US ambassador to Bangkok during Trump’s first term.

Trump made the announcement on his decision to nominate DeSombre for the State Department post in a social media post, voicing confidence that he will "work incredibly hard" for the United States.

"I am pleased to announce that Ambassador Michael George DeSombre will be nominated as the next United States Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump said “did a great job!" as the US ambassador to Thailand during his first term.

Meanwhile DeSombre said in his X account; @MichaelDeSombre, "I am honored that President Trump has given me the opportunity to serve our great country again!".

DeSombre is a partner at Sullivan & Cromwell, a New York-based law firm, where he leads affairs related to mergers and acquisitions in Asia as well as Korea and Southeast Asia practices.

He joined the firm in 2021 after serving as the ambassador to Thailand from 2020-2021.
