Flood situation in Phuket is improving

The flood situation in Phuket has improved today (Monday), after heavy rains caused by a tropical depression.
Floodwater in Phuket has receded from Phuket Old Town, particularly around the clock tower, which was 30cm deep. Currently some roads remain closed for safety reasons.
Some low-lying areas remain inundated, but the floodwater levels have reduced. Three sub-districts in Thalang district are, however, still under water.
One resident told reporters that they did not expect Phuket to flood and that it is the first time in 50 years that they have experienced flash flooding.
Phuket Governor Narong Woonsiew has ordered authorities to set up a disaster relief centre and deploy officials to help residents.
Meanwhile, President of the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation, Rawat Areerob, said that volunteers have been offering food to those affected by the floods and have set up soup kitchens.
He also said that all authorities, such as the Phuket City Municipality, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation in Phuket, local leaders and the private sector are ready to assist those who have been affected.
People in Phuket who are still affected by the floods can inform the Provincial Administrative Organisation.
