China reports improved ecological environment in 2025

BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- China saw its ecological environment improve in 2025 thanks to constant efforts to fight pollution and sustain green development, official data showed on Thursday.

The national average concentration of PM2.5 was 28 micrograms per cubic meter in 2025, which was down 4.4 percent year on year, according to the 2026 national ecological environment protection work conference.

The proportion of days with good air quality climbed 1.9 percentage points year on year to 89.3 percent in 2025.

The nationwide proportion of surface-water bodies classified as "good quality" was 91.4 percent in 2025 -- up 1 percentage point from the year prior.

The proportion of coastal waters graded "good quality" came in at 84.9 percent, which was up 1.2 percentage points.

The Ministry of Ecology and Environment has outlined its key tasks for 2026, including the advancement of pollution prevention, strengthened environmental supervision and the acceleration of technological innovation. ■
