Japanese Traditional Crafts “Marugame Uchiwa” Paper Fan

Marugame uchiwa paper fans are a type of fan made in the area around the city of Marugame, Kagawa prefecture. They were first made as souvenirs for pilgrims who came from all over the country to visit the Konpira shrine. Nowadays, over 90% of uchiwa in Japan are produced in Marugame.

Instead of its usefulness, Marugame uchiwa is also a traditional craft. The handle and framework are often made from a single piece of bamboo which require a very professional technique. Besides, Marugame uchiwa are very light, user-friendly, fit the hand well which make them popular among Japanese.

There are many types of uchiwa available in stores and you can choose anything you like from traditional types to modern ones. Let’s get a fan for your own so that you can enjoy a cool summer! Or you may want to make your own fan by joining an uchiwa making experience course!
