Single tuna fetches record 3.25 mln USD at new year auction in Tokyo
TOKYO, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- A bluefin tuna fetched a record 510.3 million yen (about 3.25 million U.S. dollars) at the first tuna auction of 2026 at Tokyo's Toyosu fish market on Monday.
Of some 250 tunas up for auction at the annual event, the 243-kilogram bluefin netted the new record-high bid, beating the previous record of 333.6 million yen set in 2019.
The top item was caught off Oma in Japan's northeastern prefecture of Aomori, where tunas are widely known for their exceptional quality.
Kiyomura, the company that operates the major Sushizanmai sushi chain, won the auction at the popular wholesale fish market for the first time in six years, exceeding its previous record set in 2019.■
