BEIJING, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Amid an increase in overdose deaths caused by street drugs, two supervised drug-injection sites, the first in the United States, began operating last week, The New York Times reported.
The sites "provided clean needles, administered naloxone to reverse overdoses and provided users with options for addiction treatment," said the report.
More than 100,000 overdose deaths were recorded nationwide in the 12-month period that ended in April, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. ■
