Chinese shares close mixed Thursday

BEIJING, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed mixed on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.16 percent to 4,157.98 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.3 percent lower at 14,300.08 points.

The combined turnover of these two indices totaled over 3.23 trillion yuan (about 462.9 billion U.S. dollars), up from 2.97 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.

Stocks related to liquor, oil, and media and entertainment led the gains, while shares in the power generation equipment and electronic device sectors suffered major losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.57 percent to close at 3,304.51 points Thursday.

The STAR Composite Index, which reflects the performance of stocks on China's sci-tech innovation board, closed 2.63 percent lower at 1,831.1 points. ■
