Sci-fi thriller "Alien: Romulus" stays atop Chinese box office

BEIJING, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- 20th Century Studios' sci-fi thriller "Alien: Romulus" continued to lead the Chinese mainland's daily box office on Saturday, according to the China Movie Data Information Network.

The movie, which is the seventh installment of the successful "Alien" franchise, grossed over 54.82 million yuan (about 7.68 million U.S. dollars) on the day.

It tells the story of a group of young space colonists who encounter the universe's most terrifying life form while scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station.

Domestic crime drama "Untouchable," featuring comic star Shen Teng, ranked second on the chart with a revenue of 29.62 million yuan on its second day of screening Saturday.

Drama film "The Hedgehog," directed by renowned Chinese director Gu Changwei, came in third on Saturday, earning 24.01 million yuan.

The total box office revenue on the Chinese mainland on Saturday hit 187.46 million yuan. ■
