Chinese shares close lower Monday

BEIJING, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 2.48 percent to 4,015.75 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.69 percent lower at 13,824.35 points.

The combined turnover of these two indices totaled 2.58 trillion yuan (about 370.18 billion U.S. dollars), down from 2.84 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.

Shares in the oil, non-ferrous metal and coal sectors suffered major losses, while stocks related to liquor and power generation equipment rallied.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 2.46 percent to close at 3,264.11 points Monday.

The STAR Composite Index, which reflects the performance of stocks on China's sci-tech innovation board, closed 3.95 percent lower at 1,760.23 points on Monday. ■
