BEKASI, Indonesia, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Mangrove forests, home to a diverse array of animals and insects, stabilize shorelines, reduce erosion from waves and tides, and act as a buffer against storm surges and tsunamis in the Bekasi district of West Java province, Indonesia.
July 26 marks the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem. Adopted by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 2015, this special day aims to raise awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems as "unique, special and vulnerable ecosystems" and to promote solutions for their sustainable management, conservation and uses.
