BEIJING, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines from the past week:

1. China secures women's singles title at table tennis Asian Cup

Chinese paddlers secured all semifinal spots in the women's singles event at the 34th ITTF-ATTU Asian Cup on February 22.

Women's world No. 1 Sun Yingsha prevailed 4-2 over Japan's Miwa Harimoto, and she will take on Chen Xingtong, who eliminated another Japanese paddler, Mima Ito 4-1.

The other semifinal pits Kuai Man against Wang Manyu.

In the men's singles, Chinese paddlers snatched three berths in the last four. Top-ranked Lin Shidong saw off Yukiya Uda of Japan 4-1, while his compatriot Liang Jingkun moved past Japan's Tomokazu Harimoto 4-2.

After outplaying Shunsuke Togami in straight games, Wang Chuqin will contend for a final spot with Lin Yun-ju from Chinese Taipei.

2. China loses to Saudi Arabia in AFC U20 Asian Cup quarterfinals

Substitute Amar Alyuhabi scored a last-minute goal as host China fell 1-0 to Saudi Arabia in the quarterfinals of the 2025 AFC U20 Asian Cup on February 22, missing out on qualification for the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile.

China dominated possession with 59%, but the young squad struggled to convert chances, including a missed penalty in the second half.

According to U20 Asian Cup regulations, the top four teams of the tournament qualify for the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup, which will take place in Chile from September to October.

3. China defeats Japan to secure spot in FIBA Asia Cup

The Chinese men's basketball team won 100-58 over Japan in a Group C game of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers on February 20, securing its place in the Asia Cup.

Hu Jinqiu of China and Ryusei Sasaki of Japan both finished with a game-high 17 points, while Zhao Rui contributed 16 points for the host.

China will face Guam on February 23 in the second game of the third window. The 2025 FIBA Asia Cup will take place from August 5 to 17 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

4. China concludes short track speed skating Milan event with 1 gold, 1 bronze

China bagged one gold and one bronze at the ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Tour that concluded in Milan on February 16.

Sun Long won the men's 500m gold, while China's women secured bronze in the 3,000m relay on February 15.

As a key test event for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, the competition was highly valued by all participating teams. Aside from Asian Winter Games champion Lin Xiaojun, who was absent due to injury, China fielded nearly all of its top skaters.

5. Xu becomes first Chinese skipper to complete Vendee Globe

Chinese sailor Xu Jingkun crossed the finish line of the 2024-2025 Vendee Globe on February 18, becoming the first Chinese skipper to finish the race and the 100th skipper in the history of the tournament to achieve this feat.

This edition of the Vendee Globe started with 40 competitors, six of whom were forced to withdraw due to various challenges.

Xu was the 30th sailor to cross the finish line, completing the journey in 99 days, 19 hours, six minutes, and 11 seconds. However, due to a penalty for a rule infraction near the finish line, he was given a one-hour time penalty, making his official race time 99 days, 20 hours, six minutes, and 11 seconds. ■
