Eight people were killed and 32 others injured when a freight train slammed into a public bus and multiple other vehicles on a railway crossing in Bangkok on Saturday afternoon, near the Makkasan Airport Rail Link station, sparking a horrific blaze.

The tragedy has prompted an urgent government investigation into a suspected malfunction of the automatic crossing barriers.

Emergency services were alerted via the 199 hotline at 3.42pm regarding a severe fire involving a blue, air-conditioned Route 206 passenger bus, operated by the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA).

The incident occurred on Asoke-Din Daeng Road in Huai Khwang district.

According to initial police reports, a heavy freight train collided with the bus and a motorcycle on the crossing, triggering an immediate and massive fire. Eyewitnesses reported that flames engulfed the bus within minutes, accompanied by intermittent explosions as the fire reached the vehicle's fuel tank.

As the train dragged the wreckage along the tracks, the bus struck several nearby cars and motorcycles, causing the fire to spread rapidly to the adjacent vehicles. Firefighters brought the blaze under control in less than an hour.

Upon inspecting the charred remains of the bus, rescue workers discovered the bodies of eight passengers. BMTA officials later confirmed that the bus driver was among the deceased.

Emergency responders and Good Samaritans rushed the injured to various nearby hospitals.

Officials initially reported 25 injuries, but the toll later rose to 32, with two people listed in critical condition.

High-ranking officials, including Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat and BMTA Director Kittikan Chomdoung Charuworapolkul, rushed to the scene to oversee the emergency response and coordinate relief efforts.

Witnesses noted that the crossing's safety barriers appeared to be malfunctioning prior to the crash and video footage posted on social media at the moment of impact supported these claims, showing the barrier arm stuck in the upright position.

Speaking to reporters at the scene, Deputy Transport Minister Siripong expressed deep concern over the apparent failure.

"Normally, the automatic barrier arms must drop completely to block the road, which simultaneously triggers the warning signals," Siripong said. "In this specific incident, the barrier arms failed to lower and the warning signals were not activated. Yet, the train still barreled through the crossing."

He emphasised that the movement of the train and the lowering of the gates must be completely synchronised. "Since they weren't, someone is absolutely at fault here," the deputy minister added.

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has retrieved the train’s data recorder for analysis of its speed and braking telemetry.

The SRT has also handed over all relevant CCTV footage, from both the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) network and the railway control booth, to forensic specialists.

Siripong noted that, because it was a heavy transport train, investigators have yet to determine whether the train driverattempted to brake, if a mechanical failure occurred or if there was simply insufficient distance to stop.

Regarding compensation, the deputy minister stated that the BMTA’s third-party liability insurance covers upwards of 1 million Baht per instance.

He promised, however, to arrange a more comprehensive relief package, saying "We must coordinate across all involved agencies to ensure that every single victim and their family receives full, swift and fair compensation for this tragedy."

Makkasan Airport Rail Link station can still operate normally.
