Deputy Commerce Minister Napintorn Srisunpang told reporters that Koh Sukorn watermelon is now Thailand’s first GI-listed watermelon variety, and the fourth GI-certified product from the Andaman coastal province.
He stated that the watermelon’s naturally sweet taste, light green rind, and fine texture - featuring red, orange, or yellow flesh - are its key distinguishing qualities. Its rarity as a sea-borne variety further enhances its uniqueness.
According to local accounts, the seeds were originally brought to the island by a Chinese sea captain who temporarily sought refuge there during a strong monsoon season.
The deputy minister expressed optimism that the GI recognition of this well-known community product will help boost the local economy and improve the well-being of the island’s residents.
Previously, three other Trang-originated products were granted GI status at both provincial and national levels: Muang Trang Roasted Pork, Trang Pepper, and Bao Yod Muang Trang Rice.
