Thai vessels await clearance as Bangkok holds talks with Iran
Bangkok is in talks with Iran to allow Thai commercial vessels to pass safely through the Strait of Hormuz, Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said on Wednesday.
Iran has requested detailed information on each vessel, including cargo on board and final destinations, Sihasak said, adding that Thai authorities are gathering additional data on ships still awaiting clearance in the area.
During his upcoming visit to Oman on April 15 and 16, he will explore ways to coordinate with Omani officials on communication channels with Iran to facilitate negotiations.
Commenting on reports that a Thai oil tanker had diverted to deliver fuel to Singapore, Sihasak said he was not aware of the case.
“We have requested that the vessel return to Thailand. As far as we understand, Thai cargo must be delivered to Thailand,” he said.
When asked whether private shipping companies could choose to divert shipments to Singapore, he acknowledged that it was ultimately a business decision, but reiterated that, in principle, Thai shipments should be delivered domestically.
On energy cooperation, Sihasak said discussions on potential oil purchases from Russia are being handled by the Energy Ministry and PTT.
Russia is, in principle, able to sell oil to Thailand, he said, noting that key considerations include whether Russian crude is compatible with Thai refineries and complications in payment systems.
He warned that financial transactions could risk violating international sanctions and face banking restrictions.
