In a drainage trench, about three meters deep, rescuers found the unconscious body of the victim at about 7.30am. He was partly submerged in muddy water with a large concrete slab on top of him.
Emergency crews pumped water out of the trench and were able to free him. They resuscitated him, before rushing him to a nearby hospital.
He was, however, subsequently pronounced dead.
The construction site, located in the outbound express lane of Rama II Road, opposite Sombunwit School, is part of a closed section where the elevated road project is underway, linking the Rama III–Dao Khanong–Western Outer Ring Road, overseen by the Expressway Authority of Thailand.
A worker told police that, while they were laying drainage pipes under the elevated road structure, the ground suddenly collapsed.
The victim, who was working below, was buried under falling soil and a slab of concrete.
