Heavy rain triggers flash floods, disrupts traffic in Kanchanaburi
Hours of torrential downpours on Sunday triggered flash floods across several areas of Kanchanaburi province, inundating key roads and disrupting traffic on the newly opened motorway network.
The heavy rainfall, which lashing the province continuously on Oct 11, caused runoff to spill over onto a section of the M81 motorway's inbound off-ramp leading into downtown Kanchanaburi.
The surge submerged one lane, forcing motorists to navigate the exit via a single lane and causing localised traffic congestion.
In addition to the motorway disruption, floodwaters hit U Thong Road, rising to a depth of approximately 30 centimetres. The overflow subsequently spilled into adjacent residential areas, inundating the Chong Charoen and U Thong Chatsan Wat Nuea communities.
Meanwhile, water levels along the Mae Klong River rose steadily, overflowing its banks and flooding sections of the waterfront road in front of the municipal city center.
