Thailand eyes new global markets for tapioca exports
The Commerce Ministry has launched a new plan to expand exports of Thai tapioca products to more potential markets across major regions, driven by growing global recognition of the high quality and standards of the products.
Noppadon Kuntamas, deputy director-general of the ministry’s Department of Foreign Trade, told the media that emerging markets for Thai tapioca products include Japan, the 27-member European Union (EU), North America and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
He said the new plan emphasises promoting premium-grade and innovative Thai tapioca products in these potential markets, including tapioca pellets for cattle feed, adhesive materials, acetylated starch and other modified tapioca starch products.
Outstanding characteristics of locally grown tapioca — including its non-genetically modified status and gluten-free but high-energy properties — make it more favourable in international markets.
He noted that demand for Thai exports of acetylated starch, which can be used in high-quality animal feed or processed bio-plastic products, has been rising particularly in Japan.
According to the senior official, a recent visit to Japan by a Thai delegation of specialised officials and experienced business operators has helped secure growing demand for the country’s value-added tapioca products.
Exports of Thai tapioca products exceeded 8 million tonnes in 2025, valued at more than 95 billion baht, a year-on-year increase of more than 26% in volume.
