But now, a young warrior is poised to reignite the fire. Enter Kasidit Samrej, a 23-year-old sensation, ready to smash his way into history and restore Thailand’s place on the tennis map.
On Monday, January 13, Kasidit will step onto the grand stage at Melbourne Park as the first Thai man in 13 years to compete in a Grand Slam singles main draw.
For over a decade, Thai tennis has lingered in obscurity, its golden era a fading memory. The electrifying days of Paradorn Srichaphan and Danai Udomchoke, when the sport captivated a nation, seemed lost in time.
Armed with a wildcard entry to the Australian Open, he is set to join the pantheon of Thai greats, becoming only the third man from his country to achieve this feat.
Kasidit’s ticket to the Australian Open wasn’t handed to him; it was earned through grit and determination. At the November AO Asia-Pacific Wildcard Play-off in Chengdu, China, he battled Japan’s Rio Noguchi in a high-stakes final.

The tension was palpable as Kasidit overcame a challenging second set, ultimately prevailing 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. With that victory, he earned his place among the elite at Melbourne Park.
Kasidit’s journey to this moment has been anything but smooth. Despite being well trained by his father Vittaya, a former national champion, he suffered a series of poor results at one point.
He found himself sidelined for nearly two years, questioning his future in the sport. During this time, he dabbled in other activities but could not shake his deep-seated love for tennis. It was a turning point—a moment when passion triumphed over doubt.

Towards the end of 2024, he elevated his game by participating in ATP Challenger tournaments, stepping up from the less competitive ITF events.
Facing tougher opponents not only pushed him to new heights but also earned him a career-high ranking of No. 413 in the world.
“It was part of a strategic plan my team and I devised—to compete in higher-level tours and develop myself further. That experience ultimately led to the success of qualifying for a Grand Slam,” he tells Thai PBS World.
For Kasidit, the Australian Open is more than a tournament; it’s the culmination of a lifelong dream. “Going to a Grand Slam has always been my dream,” he says.
“I had planned to achieve this in 2026, but qualifying this year exceeded my expectations. It feels like a dream come true.”
What makes this achievement even more poignant for Kasidit, known to friends and family as “Boom”, is the desire to lift Thai tennis from its slumber.
“When I was a kid, tennis was still booming, but by the time I was a teenager, it started to fade away. That’s why I have this feeling that I want to be the one to make tennis boom and be great again,” he says, the passion evident in his voice.
Kasidit’s story is one of resilience, talent, and unwavering determination. As he prepares to make his debut at Melbourne Park, the hopes of a nation rest on his shoulders.
But Kasidit is no stranger to pressure. With every swing of his racquet, he carries the legacy of Paradorn and Danai while forging his own path.
“I want to inspire the next generation of Thai players,” he said. “Tennis has given me so much, and I want to give back by showing that Thai players can compete on the world stage.”
The rising star couldn’t have asked for better preparation ahead of his Major debut, having been invited to train with former World No. 1 Novak Djokovic during preseason training in Phuket last month.
“It was an invaluable experience to practice with one of the greatest players in history. He shared useful techniques for serving and returning. I’m deeply inspired and honored to have had this opportunity,' he said."
As Kasidit steps onto the court to face former US Open champion and World No. 5 Daniil Medvedev of Russia at the Australian Open, he symbolizes the revival of Thai tennis.
His journey stands as a powerful testament to perseverance and the unwavering belief in one’s dreams. With his remarkable talent and determination, Kasidit competes not only for himself but also for the future of tennis in Thailand.
For Thai fans, the Australian Open will be more than just another tournament. It’s a chance to witness history in the making, as a young man with a dream takes on the world and brings hope to a nation hungry for a new tennis hero. Kasidit Samrej is ready to deliver, and the world is watching.
