Four killed as construction crane collapses onto train in Korat
At least four people were killed and several others were injured when a construction crane collapsed onto a moving passenger train in Nakhon Ratchasima province on Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred when a huge crane from the high-speed rail project fell onto a Bangkok–Ubon Ratchathani train travelling beneath the elevated tracks in Sikhio district.
The accident occurred at about 9.30am as the three-carriage passenger train was running along the track beneath the elevated section of the high-speed rail project, which is currently under construction. A crane suddenly collapsed and crashed onto the moving train, causing it to derail.
Initial reports said four passengers were killed and many others were injured.
Emergency teams were rushed to the scene to assist the injured and to search for passengers who may have been trapped or buried beneath the derailed carriages and the collapsed crane.
Rescue workers used hydraulic cutting and spreading equipment to free passengers trapped inside the carriages, as the train cars and crane became entangled.
Authorities confirmed that more than 20 people were injured and were taken to nearby hospitals, while rescue operations continued amid difficult conditions.
Officials said further details would be released as investigations into the cause of the crane collapse get under way.
