🔻 English below 🔻

“Real Pride Has to Reach Every Province, Every Kind of Work, and Everyone Still Unheard”: Gun Rungroj Somboonkao on the Voices Pride Still Has Not Reached, and His Vision for WorldPride 2030
- Gun Rungroj Somboonkao, Journalist at The Active Thai PBS and host of The Active Podcast

Gun is a field journalist at The Active Thai PBS and host of The Active Podcast. He has followed gender diversity since Chiang Mai Pride, through to the day Parliament passed marriage equality.

He believes Thailand is more than ready to host WorldPride — hotels in Bangkok, provinces and regions ready to welcome, and a level of safety that includes the safety to be yourself.

Pride in Thailand does not exist only in Bangkok. Spreading Pride across provinces matters to the movement, because each place has a different audience and a different context.

In Pattaya he saw that gender diversity is not only about marriage equality but about the right to earn a living with dignity — work that is still criminalised, with calls to repeal the 1996 anti-prostitution law.
Pride in Pattaya also teaches HIV awareness, safer sex, PrEP and access to testing — work he says these communities do in place of the state, cutting Thailand’s HIV cycle.

Surin is the province he most wants to visit: rich in cultural diversity yet less open, and he wants to help its voices grow louder.

His camera has been with him since Chiang Mai Pride, through Bangkok and Pattaya, and all the footage is still on it.

To him the camera is not just an electronic device but a tool that has recorded history, including the marriage equality vote he covered from Parliament.

He prefers the small camera because it is agile and informal, capturing key moments better than large TV rigs.

His picture of WorldPride 2030 is the moment the whole country hears itself — not simply Bangkok hosting.
Gun Rungroj Somboonkao is a journalist at The Active Thai PBS and host of The Active Podcast. His job is to be where things happen, to collect what people actually say, and to tell the story so others can see the same picture. Gender diversity has been one of his long-running threads — from Chiang Mai Pride, through Bangkok and Pattaya, to the day Parliament passed marriage equality.

Asked whether Thailand is ready to host WorldPride, Gun answers with confidence: we are very ready. There are many hotels in Bangkok, and provinces and regions across the country are ready to welcome people who travel in for the event. He also believes safety here is at a good level — safety in daily life, and the safety to be yourself. What remains, he says, is not readiness but openness.

What he stresses most is that Pride in Thailand does not exist only in Bangkok, and that spreading Pride across provinces matters enormously to the LGBTQ+ movement here. Each place has a different audience and a different context, so Pride arriving in a province is not simply one more event — it opens space for a new group of people to have a voice.

Pattaya impressed him especially, because most of the audience there is made up of sex workers. That made it clear to him that gender diversity is not only about marriage equality, but about the right and freedom to work with dignity — work that is still criminalised today, with the repeal of the Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act B.E. 2539 (1996) among the demands. He also points out that Pride in Pattaya is not only a celebration: it provides information on HIV, safer sex, PrEP and the right to access testing through the national health scheme, and in his view these groups speak up in place of the state and play a major role in cutting the HIV cycle in Thailand.

The province he most wants to visit now is Surin. It is rich in cultural diversity, but acceptance of gender diversity there may be lower than elsewhere. He wants to go so that local voices grow louder, and to see how people there manage to hold an event under that kind of public gaze — and how we can communicate that to everyone else.

As a journalist, what connects him most to his work is his camera. It has been with him since Chiang Mai Pride, through Bangkok and Pattaya, and all the footage is still on it. To him it is not just an electronic device but a tool that has recorded history — including the day Parliament voted on marriage equality, which he covered with this camera because it is agile and looks less formal, catching moods the big TV cameras miss.

For him, the picture of WorldPride 2030 is therefore not simply Bangkok hosting. It is the moment the whole country hears itself — and he is ready to record that moment with the same camera.

“Real Pride has to reach every province, every kind of work, and everyone who has not yet had the chance to speak.”

Gun Rungroj Somboonkao is one of the voices affirming that Thai Pride is wider than the capital and deeper than a single law — because real Pride has to reach every province, every kind of work, and everyone who has not yet had the chance to speak. Bangkok — Candidate City for WorldPride 2030 — is the opportunity for Thailand to let those voices rise together.
