At the time, it was almost impossible to imagine Thailand hosting a large Pride parade—let alone aspiring to host WorldPride.
The launch of Bangkok Pride in 2022 made that vision more tangible. The parade demonstrated the strength of the community and encouraged people to imagine change on a much larger scale. For Pong, WorldPride should not be an experience available only to those with the resources to travel abroad. Many people in Thailand and across Asia do not have that opportunity, raising a vital question: why should Thailand not open the first door and bring WorldPride to the region?
Pong believes Thailand is ready in many respects and is relatively safe for LGBTQIAN+ people compared with several countries in the region. If Thailand can host WorldPride while seriously advancing equality, it could inspire neighboring countries to recognize that progress is both hopeful and possible. However, the goal must go beyond staging an event or generating economic benefits. The substance of LGBTQIAN+ rights must advance alongside the celebration.
The road to WorldPride 2030 offers an opportunity to push forward crucial issues, from ensuring that marriage equality fully protects family life to legal gender recognition for transgender and non-binary people, the rights of sex workers, and comprehensive anti-discrimination protections. Pong believes this global milestone should help transform laws, social structures, and public understanding rather than become a temporary image of celebration.
Change cannot be achieved by one community alone. It requires an ecosystem of cooperation among government, businesses, civil society, activists, and allies willing to listen, join hands, and share resources. Every sector has a role in ensuring that WorldPride, legal reform, and social understanding advance together, rather than leaving responsibility to a single organization or group.
For Pong, WorldPride 2030 must not belong to Bangkok alone. Bangkok Pride therefore works with the Pride City Network and advocates from provinces across Thailand, creating opportunities to learn, exchange experiences, and support one another. Every area has its own context and priorities.
Moving forward together will allow communities to adapt knowledge to local events and campaigns while generating nationwide momentum for LGBTQIAN+ rights.
LGBTQIAN+ rights touch every stage of life: being born with the freedom to define one’s identity, choosing whom to love and share a life with, building a family, deciding whether to have children, accessing insurance and welfare that recognize one’s identity and relationships, and growing older with security and quality of life equal to everyone else. The movement is therefore not only about visibility; it is about enabling people to shape their own lives, relationships, and futures on equal terms.
Pong’s message to society is clear: “We are not merely someone else’s color. We are dignity—and a quality of life that we have the right to define for ourselves.” LGBTQIAN+ people do not matter only during festivals or parades; they are people with lives, dreams, and inherent dignity. The journey from Bangkok Pride to WorldPride 2030 is therefore not simply a path toward a global celebration, but toward a society where everyone can be themselves, love freely, build a family, and grow older with dignity and well-being.
