Thai special envoy holds talks in Naypyidaw
Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow has dispatched a special envoy to discuss the post-election situation and bilateral issues, according to an informed source.
The Thai delegation, led by Kallayana Vipattipumiprates, a former ambassador to Myanmar, held talks with Hau Khan Sum, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The discussions were held on Thursday at the ministry in Naypyidaw.
According to Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the talks focused on strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Kallayana’s visit followed a recent trip by Myanmar’s Foreign Minister Than Shwe to Phuket for a retreat with Sihasak.
Both sides held extensive dialogue on Myanmar’s crisis. Kallayana serves as an adviser on Myanmar affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The delegation met with Hau Khan Sum during their visit to Myanmar. The discussions, held at the ministry in Naypyidaw, covered prospects for enhancing relations and promoting mutually beneficial cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
The visit also coincided with Myanmar’s preparations for a leadership transition, with the Union Parliament set to elect a new president on March 30, parliamentary speaker Aung Lin Dwe announced at the opening of the legislature’s latest session on Friday.
The vote will take place after lawmakers choose three vice presidents — one each from the lower house, the Pyithu Hluttaw; the upper house, the Amyotha Hluttaw; and the military bloc. One of the three vice presidents will then be selected as president by parliament.
The legislature is dominated by the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party, giving the armed forces significant influence over the outcome.
Meanwhile, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing will officially retire from his post as commander-in-chief at the end of March. He is also set to attend the annual Armed Forces Day parade on March 27 for the final time in that role.
