เหตุดังกล่าวเกิดขึ้นในช่วงที่พ่อแม่ของเด็กชายไปฉลองปีใหม่ด้วยการสักการะศาลเจ้าและปล่อยให้ลูกน้อยอยู่ที่ห้องพักเพียงลำพัง
ด้านตำรวจสันนิษฐานว่าเด็กชายพลัดตกจากระเบียงของห้องพักบนชั้น 9 ก่อนไปเสียชีวิตที่โรงพยาบาล และว่ามีการโทรศัพท์แจ้งเหตุด่วนขอรถพยาบาลเมื่อเวลาประมาณ 01.25 น.เบื้องต้นพ่อแม่ของเด็กชายให้การว่าไปศาลเจ้าเพราะคิดว่าลูกชายนอนหลับแล้ว
