Security level raised nationwide following yesterday’s school shooting

Thailand’s Department of Provincial Administration (DOPA) has ordered a nationwide security tightening, aimed at curbing violent crime, illegal firearms and illicit drugs, following a deadly shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai district of Nonthaburi yesterday.

DOPA Director General Narucha Kosacivilize announced the initiative yesterday, emphasising the need for proactive measures across all provinces to prevent such incidents and ensure public safety.

Under the directive, provincial authorities and local registrars must strictly enforce firearm possession laws, requiring licensed gun owners to secure their weapons and ammunition to prevent unauthorised access.

District chief officers have been instructed to mobilise local administrative forces, including deputy district chiefs, village headmen, Volunteer Defense Corps members and Village Security Teams, step up patrols and establish checkpoints.

These operations will target public spaces, risk areas and nightlife venues to enforce a strict ban on the carrying of firearms in public.

Security protocols are also being tightened at critical infrastructure locations, particularly schools, educational institutions, houses of worship and shopping centers.

Local officials must implement tighter security systems and conduct active-shooter drills, so staff and the public know how to respond during emergency situations.

Furthermore, field officers will actively monitor individuals behaving suspiciously or who have the potential to be violent.

Authorities are urging parents to supervise minors closely, while relevant agencies accelerate access to mental health support, financial relief and legal assistance for the victims and families affected by the Nonthaburi tragedy.

Narucha reiterated that the department will integrate operations with all sectors to prevent violence and ensure public safety.

He also instructed administrative officials at all levels to carry out their duties strictly, decisively and continuously to rebuild the confidence and peace of mind for everyone.
