Thailand, Cambodia agree in principle on ceasefire starting tomorrow
After three days of intense negotiations at the Ban Pakkad immigration office in Pong Nam Ron district of Chanthaburi province, the secretariats of the General Border Committees (GBC) of Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to terms for an initial ceasefire, to take effect tomorrow.
A source close to the Thai secretariat said that the initial ceasefire will be monitored for 72 hours and any subsequent ceasefire agreement will need to be approved by the National Security Council (NSC).
The source said that the atmosphere at the GBC secretariat meeting today was tense, as both sides strove to craft a ceasefire agreement which is mutually acceptable. The meeting ended with a draft agreement, the sixth of its kind.
If approved today by the NSC, chaired by caretaker Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Thai Defence Minister Gen Nattaphon Nakpanich will sign the peace agreement with his Cambodian counterpart in Chanthaburi province tomorrow.
