4-day Songkran festival brought 500m Baht to Khaosan Road
The 4-day festival, which is held from April 12 to 15, injected around 500m to 600m baht into circulation for businesses on Khaosan Road, according to Sanga Ruangwattanakul, president of the Khaosan Road Business Association.
He said that this year's revenue growth can be attributed to an increase in the number of international tourists and the fact that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) organised events in both on Khaosan Road and Sanam Luang.
On Khaosan Road alone, there were 600 street vendors throughout the festival and the total number of visitors is estimated at 400,000 for the 4-day period, according to Sanga.
Thousands of revellers on Khaosan Road and the surrounding areas send off the last night of Songkran festival with water fights, music and dancing.
As Songkran celebration in Khaosan Road comes to a close at 24:00, a team of more than 30 cleaners from Phra Nakhon District Office were assembled to help clear the road off plastic bottles, packaging and rubbish.
The road surface was later sprayed with water to wash off the white scented power used in the water fights.
Accroding to Pol Maj Gen Atthaporn Wongsiripreeda, the number of party goers between 18:00 and 22:30 reached 90,000 on the police AI detection system and the number kept increasing as the night wore on.
Pol Col Sanong Saengmanee of Chanasongkram police station said that no additional revellers are allowed to enter Khaosan Road from 24:00 onwards to avoid overcrowding. Those who are already in the area will be permitted to party on until pubs closing time.
