เครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์ หมายถึงสิ่งซึ่งพระมหากษัตริย์พระราชทานเพื่อเป็นเครื่องหมายถึงเกียรติยศและบำเหน็จความชอบ ซึ่งแต่เดิมชาวบ้านก็เรียกกันง่ายๆ ว่า เหรียญตรา หรือ ตรา

การพระราชทานเหรียญตราให้แก่ข้าราชการที่ทำความดีความชอบนั้นเป็นประเพณีนิยมที่เริ่มมาจากประเทศฝั่งตะวันตกที่มีพระเจ้าแผ่นดินเป็นประมุข ส่วนประเพณีนิยมของไทยในสมัยก่อน เครื่องหมายที่ชี้ให้เห็นยศฐาบรรดาศักดิ์ ได้แก่ การพระราชทานเครื่องประดับยศ เช่น พานทอง หรือ หีบหมาก

เครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์ของไทยพบหลักฐานตั้งแต่ในสมัยอยุธยา คือ สังวาลพระนพ ซึ่งเป็นเครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์ของพระมหากษัตริย์ ต่อมาในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลก รัชกาลที่ 1 ได้ทรงสร้าง สังวาลนพรัตน์ ขึ้นอีกสายหนึ่ง

พ.ศ 2400 พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 4 ได้ทรงสร้าง ดารา ขึ้นสำหรับติดเสื้อ แต่สมัยนั้นยังไม่ได้บัญญัติให้เรียกว่าอะไร โดยทั่วๆไปจึงมักเรียกว่า “ตรา” ตามภาษาอังกฤษว่า “เดคอเรแซน” (decoration) หรือบางคนเรียก “ออระแซน” แต่พระองค์ท่านเองทรงเรียกว่า “เครื่องประดับสำหรับยศ” ซึ่งถ้าเป็นเครื่องประดับเฉพาะของพระมหากษัตริย์ทรงใช้ว่า เครื่องราชอิสริยยศ ส่วนเครื่องประดับของขุนนางทรงใช้ว่า “เครื่องสำคัญยศ”

ต่อมาในสมัยสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 5 ได้ทรงตราระเบียบเครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์สยามขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรกในพ.ศ. 2412 โปรดเกล้าให้เรียกว่า เครื่องราชอิสริยยศ และภายหลังเปลี่ยนเป็นเรียกว่า เครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์ เป็นของที่พระมหากษัตริย์พระราชทานเป็นบำเหน็จรางวัลแก่พระบรมวงศานุวงศ์ ข้าราชการไทยและชาวต่างประเทศ ถือเป็นเกียรติยศแก่ผู้ที่ได้รับ

ประเทศไทยนับว่าเป็นประเทศแรกในเอเซียที่มีเครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์ โดยผู้มีสิทธิ์ที่จะได้เครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์มีทั้งข้าราชการและประชาชนทั่วไป โดยเน้นย้ำว่าจะต้องเป็นบุคคลที่ทำประโยชน์แก่ประเทศชาติอย่างแท้จริง

ตามประกาศสำนักนายกรัฐมนตรี เรื่อง ลำดับเกียรติเครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์ไทย ได้กล่าวถึงการจัดลำดับเกียรติเครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์ ดังนี้

• มหาจักรีบรมราชวงศ์ The Most Illustrious Order of the Royal House of Chakri
• นพรัตนราชวราภรณ์ The Ancient and Auspicious Order of the Nine Gems
• ปฐมจุลจอมเกล้าวิเศษ Knight Grand Cordon (Special Class) of the Most Illustrious Order of Chula Chom Klao
• รัตนวราภรณ์ The Ratana Varabhorn order of Merit
• ปฐมจุลจอมเกล้า Knight Grand Cross (First Class) of the Most Illustrious Order of Chula Chom Klao
• รามาธิบดี ชั้นที่ 1 (เสนางคะบดี) “Senangapati” (Knight Grand Commander) of the Honourable Order of Rama
• มหาปรมาภรณ์ช้างเผือก Knight Grand Cordon (Special Class) of the Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant
• มหาวชิรมงกุฎ Knight Grand Cordon (Special Class) of the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand
• ประถมาภรณ์ช้างเผือก Knight Grand Cross (First Class) of the Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant
• ประถมาภรณ์มงกุฎไทย Knight Grand Cross (First Class) of the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand
• ปฐมดิเรกคุณาภรณ์ Knight Grand Cross (First Class) of the Most Admirable Order of the Diredgunabhorn
• ทุติยจุลจอมเกล้าวิเศษ Knight Grand Commander (Second Class, higher grade) of the Most Illustrious Order of Chula Chom Klao
• รามาธิบดี ชั้นที่ 2 (มหาโยธิน) “Maha Yodhin” (Knight Commander) of the Honorable Order of Rama
