Bangkok plans to cut visa-free stay to 30 days

The visa-free stay period will be reduced from the current 60 days to 30 days to minimise exploitation by foreigners using loopholes for purposes other than tourism, Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said today.

“We believe that 60 days may be too long and that some people who are not genuine tourists are using the exemption for illegal purposes. We want to tighten control,” Sihasak said.

He explained that the proposal had already been prepared under the previous administration, which was also led by Anutin Charnvirakul, but was delayed because of the election.

Sihasak said relevant agencies will be consulted, but he does not expect any problems.

He also said he discussed the issue with the prime minister yesterday, adding that Thailand may need to review several visa categories because there appear to be too many types.

He noted that visas generally serve useful purposes, but the large number of categories may be unnecessary and should be reviewed to determine whether some can be merged.

When asked whether Thailand would specifically shorten the permitted stay for Chinese visitors, Sihasak stressed that the government was not targeting any particular nationality.

Instead, he said authorities were focusing on activities that could pose problems for Thailand and on ensuring that visa durations are appropriate.

He added that tourist stays generally should not exceed 30 days and that visa conditions should match the intended purpose of travel.

He also emphasised that authorities must ensure holders of other visa types are genuinely using them for their stated purposes.

He insisted there would be no discrimination, but said officials must closely monitor anyone engaging in undesirable activities.
