Stranded dugong calf rescued in Ranong, sent to Phuket rescue centre
A lost female dugong calf is being closely monitored by veterinarians after being rescued from her second beaching in Laem Son National Park in Ranong on Sunday.
Park officials rushed to the mouth of a canal near Laem Son Beach, in Kapoe district, at 5.16pm after being alerted by a local network of artisanal fishermen.
The calf had previously been found stranded in a nearby mangrove forest and released back into the sea by villagers, prompting park staff to coordinate with locals to watch out for her return.
A physical examination revealed the female calf measures 112cm in length and 30cm in width. She had sustained minor scratches on her head and body. Park authorities believe she became separated from her herd before being washed ashore by strong waves and tides.
Wimonmart Nuipakdee, chief of Laem Son National Park, credited the successful rescue to the vigilance and quick reporting of the local community network.
Following the rescue, officials provided first aid to stabilise the calf, reduce her stress levels and ensure her immediate safety.
The young dugong was subsequently transported to the Sireetarn Marine Endangered Animals Rescue Centre in Phuket.
Specialised veterinarians at the facility will provide intensive nursery care and physical rehabilitation, before assessing whether she is strong enough to be released back into the wild.
