Medical lecturer being investigated after fatal Chiang Rai crash kills two

Police are gathering evidence seeking to press charges against a medical lecturer whose sedan plowed into three university students waiting at a red light in Mueang district, killing two and leaving another critically injured.

The crash occurred at around 8.15pm on August 25 at the Nang Lae intersection in Nang Lae sub-district.

Three first-year female students from Mae Fah Luang University, originating from Nan, Pattani and Chon Buri provinces, were waiting for the lights to change on their motorcycle at the roadside when the sedan violently rear-ended them.

They had arrived to begin their first year of studies in July 2026.

Witnesses reported that the force of the impact hurled the victims more than 10 meters. Two of the students died from their injuries, while the third remains severely injured.

Pol. Col. Anuson Norkhambut, chief of the Ban Du Police Station, stated on Monday that the driver has been identified as a medical lecturer at a university in Chiang Mai.

Initial breathalyser tests conducted on the night of the incident detected no alcohol in his system and his vehicle possessed valid compulsory motor insurance.

Investigators have already questioned the suspect, the attending physician treating the surviving victim and the families of the deceased as witnesses, Anuson added.

Police are currently awaiting two critical pieces of evidence to complete the case file, before forwarding it to prosecutors. It will include a forensic report on the collision tracks from evidence specialists and official autopsy and injury reports from medical examiners.
