Steam train returns as SRT launches special holiday trips to Ayutthaya
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) plans to operate seven one-day steam train trips on public holidays this year, launching the special service today with a Bangkok–Ayutthaya–Bangkok round trip to offer passengers a rare opportunity to experience rail travel from a bygone era.
Today's inaugural trip was officiated by SRT Governor Anan Nimnual, SRT Chief Engineer Annop Wongwijarn and Prasit Thavorn, director of train services, to mark the birthday of His Majesty the King.
Anan said the day trips have been arranged to enable Thai people to celebrate the auspicious occasion while reviving memories of train travel to Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
He said similar trips will be offered on special occasions each year to various destinations. The next trip is scheduled for August 12, Thailand's National Mother's Day, with Chachoengsao as the destination.
