Long queues form as ‘Thai Chuay Thai Plus’ scheme starts
Thai citizens across the country went on spending sprees today on the first day of the ‘Thai Chuay Thai Plus’ 60/40 co-payment scheme, buying food, consumer products, drinks and services.
Many retail outlets at fresh markets reported brisk business this morning as shoppers started spending. At the Vibhavadi Soi 64 market in Bangkok, queues of shoppers formed in front of outlets selling ready-made food, fresh vegetables and fruit, according to a Thai PBS reporter.
One shopper, who is a state welfare card holder, said he would return to the market this afternoon when fewer shoppers are expected. Another said he has to plan his spending under the scheme to make sure the 1,000-baht monthly subsidy is spent within a month; otherwise, the balance will be forfeited.
One vendor suggested that the government keep the prices of goods at reasonable levels to prevent manufacturers and wholesalers from overcharging.
Twenty-six million of the 30 million eligible Thais have already registered for the scheme.
Government spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek said the high number of people registering is a very positive public response that will help boost the economy.
Participants in the scheme will be able to order food delivery services and pay via the scheme from 6am to 9pm starting on June 15.
