DIT launches proactive measures to stabilise mango and longan prices

The Department of Internal Trade (DIT) has launched proactive measures in the northern provinces of Lamphun and Chiang Mai to manage the seasonal influx of mangoes and longans, aiming to prevent oversupply and maintain price stability.

DIT Deputy Director General Jirawuth Suwanna-arj visited the provinces today to prepare for the upcoming longan season, which is expected to begin in July 2026.

To ensure a systematic response, the department held discussions with the Northern Dried Longan Producers Association and the Office of Provincial Commercial Affairs in Chiang Mai and Lamphun, aimed at assessing production volume trends, quality and the price situation, while listening to feedback from all sectors.

Such first-hand information will be used to determine longan management guidelines that align with both domestic and international market conditions.

According to the DIT, the strategy for longan focuses on distributing produce away from production sources to prevent local gluts, linking farmers with advanced markets and promoting processing to increase value-added opportunities.

Furthermore, the department also held discussions with the Northern Thai Fruit Trader Association and inspections of large-scale mango plantations and collection points in San Sai District of Chiang Mai Province.

Chiang Mai is regarded as a major production source of mangoes for the country.

The objective was to track the production and marketing status of key mango varieties, such as Nam Dok Mai, Nga Chang Dang (Ivory), Dang Chakraphat (Red Emperor), and R2E2, which see consistent demand in both domestic and export markets.

Regarding the current mango season, Jirawuth reported that harvest is now in full swing.

In Lamphun, over 50% of the crop has already reached the market, while Chiang Mai has seen about 30–40% distribution. Despite the high volume, prices remain satisfactory due to steady demand for popular varieties.

To support farmers further, the DIT recently coordinated the purchase of two tonnes of ‘fancy’ mangoes from Ban Hong growers at a price of 12 baht per kilogram. These mangoes will be sold at Central Westgate to help stimulate the market.

The department emphasised that it is monitoring the situation, including volume management and private sector integration.

Jirawuth noted that the DIT has already assisted in the purchase of 3,250 tonnes of mangoes from Phitsanulok and Phichit through various partner agencies.

"The department is preparing measures to prevent oversupply and maintain price stability," said Jirawuth.

Farmers seeking assistance in distributing their produce are encouraged to contact their provincial commerce offices or the DIT directly to be connected with purchasing partners.
