Major pre-Songkran cleanup for Silom and Khaosan roads today
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) conducted a cleanup of Silom and Khao San roads today to remove a huge amount of garbage, mostly plastic bags and buckets, left behind by Songkran revellers, in preparation for further Songkran celebrations today.
The BMA reports that over 100 tonnes of rubbish was collected from various celebration locations on Sunday alone.
According to police reports, about 160,000 revelers, both Thais and non-Thais, packed Silom road during the peak hours of yesterday evening, prompting them to close the road to prevent more people from entering.
Celebrations at the two locations start at noon and end at 10 pm but, due to the scorching sun during the daytime, most visit the areas in the evening.
The BMA reports that, on April 12, more than half a million people flocked to Silom and Khao San roads, Siam Square, Iconsiam shopping mall, Banthat Thong and S20 Land Bangkok to enjoy the fun-filled water splashing activities.
