His statement came as Thailand threatened to suspend electricity supplies to Cambodian towns along the Thai-Cambodian border, in a bid to crack down on online scam operations there.
“At this time, Cambodia is not importing electricity from Thailand onto the national grid. It is zero,” Rottanak was quoted as saying bythe Khmer Times.
Cambodia’s Mines and Energy Minister Keo Rottanak.
“The reason for this non-importation is simply because Cambodia has sufficient electricity,” he insisted.
The two neighbouring countries have experienced border tensions, following a brief gun battle on May 28 in a disputed area in Ubon Ratchathani’s Nam Yuen district.
Thailand had planned to suspend the electricity supply to Cambodia, if Cambodia refused to withdraw its troops.
Despite Cambodia agreeing to pull its troops back, as requested by the Thai side, the Thai Army stated that the measure might still be necessary to suppress online call centre scam operations.
