"Aromatic coconut” registered as new Thai GI product

The Commerce Ministry has added a variety of Thai coconut, grown in the Sam Phran area of central Nakhon Pathom province and well-known for its fragrant juice, to the national list of geographical indication (GI) products.

Deputy Commerce Minister Napintorn Srisunpang announced at a news conference in Bangkok this week that the ministry’s Department of Intellectual Property has registered the "Sam Phran Aromatic Young Coconut" as a new Thai GI product.

He said the local coconut variety, popular in both domestic and global markets for its unique characteristics of fragrant juice and good taste, is now the second GI product of Nakhon Pathom province.

A variety of Thai pomelo, grown in the Nakhon Chai Si area, was previously registered as the first GI product of Nakhon Pathom, an adjacent province of Bangkok.

The deputy minister stated that officially registered GI products are included on the list of unique Thai brands globally promoted by the government under the national soft power policy, which, in turn, provides significant long-term benefits to their communities of origin and local residents.

According to the deputy minister, the “Sam Phran Aromatic Young Coconut” is also a major Thai export, generating over 570 million baht annually for local growers.
