Thailand’s unemployment rate in first nine months was 1.03 percent

Unemployment in Thailand in the third quarter fell slightly to 414,000, from 429,000 in the previous three months quarter, but was higher than in the same period last year, when 401,000 people were reported to be jobless, according to the National Economic and Social Development Council.

40 million people were in employment in the third quarter, representing a 0.1% drop compared to the second quarter, due mainly to a 3.4% contraction in the number of people employed in the farming sector, as a result of widespread flooding.

The number of people employed in construction, hospitality and food services increased by 1.4%, while employment in manufacturing, retail and vehicle repair fell slightly.

Employment in transport and goods storage services increased 14%, while employment in hotel and restaurant businesses rose by 6.1%. Employment in the automobile, computer and electronic goods sectors fell.

Of the 40 million people in employment in the third quarter, 36.69 million were Thai and the remainder were non-Thai. It was noted that the number of non-Thais in employment increased by 22.2% compared to the previous quarter.
