Bangkok’s iconic Chao Phraya River is shining brighter than ever as “Vijit Chao Phraya 2024” takes centre stage. Running until December 15, this highly-anticipated event will transform the river into a dazzling tapestry of light, colour, and culture.

Whether through stunning lighting, projection mapping on heritage landmarks, grand fireworks, or cultural performances, the festival promises to enchant visitors nightly, all while celebrating the timeless beauty of Thailand’s most famous waterway.

This year’s edition sees the introduction of a slew of new attractions and improvements, further cementing its status as one of the highlights in the city’s festive calendar.

With eight key locations along the riverfront participating, it offers a mix of both old icons and newly illuminated gems, each displaying unique light displays and artistic themes.

One of the main attractions will be the Phra Phuttha Yodfa Bridge, popularly known as the Memorial Bridge, shining with “The Marvelous Light of Dreams.”

The historic structure will present evening performances through coloured illuminations and laser displays matched with sound. Special fireworks displays on selected dates will add an air of fantasy, making the bridge a focal point of the festival.

Wat Kalayanamit, a riverside temple overflowing with spiritual significance, is the next unmissable participant this year.

With shows under the name “Radiant Lights of Faith,” these merge state-of-the-art light with Thai cultural shows. Enhanced by laser lighting displays, soundscapes, and fireworks, Wat Kalayanamit offers up an enchanting blend of faith and artistry with double shows every evening of the festival.

The Sunanthalai Building at Rajini School brings a historical and educational perspective to the festival. This 19th-century neoclassical building, commissioned by King Chulalongkorn himself in 1880, with the theme “The Magical Light of Learning,” turns into a spectacular display thanks to projection mapping and vivid light shows.

The building was named after Queen Sunanda Kumariratana, one of the King’s consorts who died tragically that year, and is now a key feature of Rajini School on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River.

Equipped with state-of-the-art surface mapping and light installations that will light up its ornate façade, arched windows, and all the intricate details, the showcase spotlessly blends heritage and innovation.

This display celebrates the enduring commitment of Thailand to education and the pursuit of knowledge, breathing life into this historic landmark in an inspiring way.

On the west bank of Bangkok, the iconic Wat Arun, popularly known as the Temple of Dawn, will dazzle in an all-spectacle showcase called “From Dawn to Dusk.”

This popular riverside landmark, already representative of Thai heritage, comes alive with mesmerizing laser projections, choreographed drone displays, and synchronized soundscapes that will highlight its detailed architecture.

For those who want to make it an unforgettable experience, selected evenings will include additional performances, affording more opportunities to see Wat Arun transformed into a glowing masterpiece across tradition and modernity.

No celebration of the Chao Phraya would be complete without the Rama VIII Bridge, a modern icon of Bangkok’s skyline. Its festival segment, themed “Brilliance of Poetic Verses,” will feature a dazzling laser and sound spectacle that transforms its structure into a canvas of light and art. The nightly performances on the bridge promise to captivate audiences with their poetic homage to the river’s cultural significance.

Those who want something different will like the abandoned building at Soi Lhong 1919. This forgotten building on the west bank has been transformed into an enigmatic experience that mingles history with modern technology on the theme “The Mysterious Night of Light,” through a series of avant-garde light and sound displays.

ICONSIAM, Bangkok’s top luxury lifestyle destination, also joins the fun with “Thai-conic Christmas Symphony.” A towering Christmas tree that lights up in tune with music will be the main icon, blending festive cheer with a distinctly Thai touch. This installation offers a perfect riverside spot to immerse oneself in the holiday spirit.

Showtimes

The event is free and open to the public, running each night from 6pm to 10pm. Performances have been carefully arranged in the venues that dot the riverside area so that people can conveniently visit the many displays.

Make it an evening to remember: take an evening riverside stroll, a boating panorama, or simply sit back at one of the riverside restaurants and let the sights and sounds envelop you.
