Christmas 的正確縮寫為 Xmas，其中 的 X 代表希臘字母 X，也是基督希臘文名字 ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ 的首字母，用來代替原本的 Christ（基督）。

那 X’mas 這個用法又是從何而來呢？Xmas 一詞傳到亞洲地區後，人們誤以為 X 為「英文 Christ」的縮寫，因此開始有人在 X 後面加上一撇，而 X’mas 這個誤用在以訛傳訛之下逐漸普及。
