iOS 12.1 首個開發者測試版更新已經發表，開發者們的「挖掘」工作又開始了。最新的成果是 Face ID 已經內建了針對裝置橫放時支援辨識。
開發者 Steve TS 表示，Face ID 的橫向支援可能已經添加到為即將發表的新款 iPad Pro（提供 Face ID）準備的更新中。他還提到橫向 Face ID 可能需要重新調整前置感測器，這在現有硬體中是從未有過的，也就是說這將是 iPad Pro 專用。
Face ID has support for landscape orientation (presumably for iPad only), and iOS 12.1 seems to care a lot more about whether an external display is connected (perhaps due to iPad USB-C rumors; it won't have the Lighting HDMI adapter as an intermediary for video-out)

另外，Steve TS 還表示，原始碼暗示MFi 遊戲搖桿的支援可能會有變化，將會提供可點擊拇指搖桿的支援，而且 iOS 12.1 還有不少與是否連接外置顯示器的程式碼，可能與從 Lightning 轉換至 USB-C 連接埠有關。
有傳聞稱蘋果可能會在年前發表新款 iPad Pro，而最佳的時間點就是 10 月份。新款 iPad Pro 據稱將採用全螢幕設計，移除主螢幕按鈕，移除耳機插孔，擁抱 Face ID、改用 USB-C 連接埠。
