Thai woman found dead in Poipet
A Thai woman, who went to work in a scam centre in the Cambodian border town of Poipet, opposite Aranyaprathet district of Sa Kaeo province, has died, allegedly after being tortured by her handler for failing to meet the scammer’s target.
The victim has been identified as ‘Suda’, a 26-year-old native of Phang-nga province. Her family lodged a complaint with Khok Kloy police in Takua Thung district of Phang-na recently, claiming that she had died and her remains had been left abandoned at a temple in Poipet, while her Thai husband, who also went there to work there, could not be located.
A non-governmental organisation, dedicated to rescue of Thai nationals working abroad, reportedly found the victim’s remains before they were to be cremated at a temple and contacted the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh for help.
The remains were later placed under the care of the Thai embassy, as attempts were made to contact her family to arrange for them to be taken home for a proper funeral.
The rescue organisation is reported to have said that ‘Suda’ was tortured by her handler, who had ordered her to do alternating repetitive squatting exercises 1,000 to 2,000 times, until she passed out. Then the handler used an electric shock device to try to wake her up, but she died.
