In my last article, I talked about how the US Federal Reserve can impact Thailand
and global economies. The latest news from the Fed is signaling that the global
economy might be slowing, particularly in China and Europe. Concern that things are
slowing prompted the Fed to indicate that it will hold interest rates steady throughout
- This is a big change from December when the central bank indicated that two
interest rate hikes were likely this year.
So what changed?
Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell says that weakening Chinese and
European economies are acting as a deterrent to U.S. growth. While US economy
grew over 3% in 2018, the slowdown from Europe and China will bring GDP growth
down to 2.1%. Slower global economic growth will have a big impact on Thai
exporters that rely on China.
Following the Fed’s lead?
The US Federal Reserve is the most powerful central bank in the world. It sets the
pace and other central banks follow. As a result, the Bank of Thailand will also
refrain from hiking rates and keep monetary policy steady. Matter of fact, we could
even see some easing as the strong Thai Baht has had a big impact on Thai
exporters.
SET reaction?
Upon the news out of America, the SET rose 9 points to 1636. The news would have
had a bigger impact if it weren’t for the upcoming weekend elections. A US Fed that
is not hiking is bullish for stocks as it is a sign that while economies may be slowing,
they won’t come crashing down.
Overall, the news is bullish for equities. The reason is that just three months ago,
investors were in a panic over the idea that the Federal Reserve might push
borrowing costs too high and tip the United States economy into a recession. Now,
Wall Street is toying with the idea that the central bank could actually be cutting
interest rates by the end of the year.
How to play the news?
With the Fed telling us that China and Europe are slowing, it’s best off not owning
Thai stocks with significant exposure to China and Europe. Focus on companies that
have strong domestic and regional demand. One Thai stock that international
investors like right now is Carabao Group Public Company Limited (CBG). Carabao is counting on rising demand in neighboring countries such as Cambodia
and Myanmar for sales growth. The stock over the last few months has been the
number one performing soft drink stock, ahead of Monster Beverage Corp and
PepsiCo. While the stock has doubled so far this year, it is still far below its 2017
highs of 108 a share. Carabao now outsells Red Bull in Thailand. If you’re a Carabao drinker and follow
the Peter Lynch rule of invest in what you know, then Carabao is one stock that
should be on your radar.
