Despite initial reports, it has been officially confirmed that Harry Styles has passed on the role of Prince Eric in a remake of iconic Disney movieThe Little Mermaid.
After getting Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy on board as Ariel and the evil Ursula, director Rob Marshall still has work to do to find the next Prince Eric. A series of premature news reports first released to the media said that Styles had agreed to take on the role before he actually made a final decision. Now, the studio has begun talking to other potential candidates and, according to Variety, it is reported that a decision should come shortly.
Since the announcement on July 16 that Disney had been in contact with Styles about his involvement in this real-life remake of the movie, many fans have been expressing their support for him. Besides Styles, actor Noah Centino was also a popular choice.
The One Direction singer has previously taken on film roles. His debut role came in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk and, more recently, Styles auditioned for biopic Elvis Presley by Baz Luhrmann, though the role ultimately fell into the hands of Austin Butler.
The Little Mermaid is expected to start filming in early 2020. The script was written by David Magee, with John DeLuca, Marc Platt and Lin-Manuel Miranda as producers.
