New data from Google's Year in Search 2019 has revealed that Indonesians prefer to consume information and news through online videos.
A summary of the data by kompas.com shows that Indonesians spend 1.2 times more time watching videos online compared to scrolling through news on social media.
Around 75 percent of respondents favor YouTube over other platforms as a news source. The increase in news searches throughout the year was 2.3 times greater than the increase in searches in other video categories.
Based on YouTube searches, Google concluded that news and games were the main drivers of growth in media and entertainment in Indonesia.

The company said around 85 percent of Generation Z consumers followed daily news online and most of them also used their smartphones to play online games.
Gen Z currently makes up 17.5 percent of total smartphone users in Indonesia, with 98.8 percent going online through their phones.
The annual Year in Search by Google comprised nine categories including public figures, songs and word meanings.
On the list of this year’s top searches in Indonesia is newcomer Andmesh Kamaleng’s single “Cinta Luar Biasa”, the presidential election, the word “bucin” (an abbreviation of “budak cinta”, meaning “slave to love”), Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Makarim and the sexual violence bill (RUU KUHP).
