Russia sees hike in daily new COVID-19 cases

Moscow is the worst-hit region, where 8,342 new cases were reported in the past 24 hours, the highest since Oct. 28.

MOSCOW, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Russia reported 31,252 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the highest since Dec. 6, taking the nationwide tally to 10,865,512, the official monitoring and response center said Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the death toll grew by 688 to 322,678, while the number of recoveries increased by 24,564 to 9,902,935.

There are currently 639,899 active cases in Russia, the center said, adding that the mortality rate remains at 2.97 percent.

Moscow is the worst-hit region, where 8,342 new cases were reported in the past 24 hours, the highest since Oct. 28, taking the total to 2,104,575.

According to the latest official data, around 80 million Russians had received at least one dose of vaccine as of Friday and some 77 million had been fully inoculated.
