BEIJING, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan Beatrice Chebet broke the women's 10,000m world record at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, the United States on Sunday.

The two-time world cross-country champion clocked 28 minutes and 54.14 seconds to make Ethiopian runner Letesenbet Gidey's record of 29:01.03 set in 2021 history.

Chebet also became the first female to finish 10,000m within 29 minutes on a track.

"When I got to the last two laps, I just got motivated and said, I'm on a world record pace, so let me push the last 400m," said Chebet, who didn't intend to challenge the world record and had a primary goal to qualify in the Kenyan Olympic trials.

Kenya's Daniel Mateiko clocked a world lead at 26:50.81, edging his compatriot Nicholas Kipkorir to win the men's 10,000m. ■
