Ever wondered how A-listers like Kate Middleton flaunt perfect hairdos, with not a single hair out of place?

Celebrity hairstylist Rossano Ferretti might have the answer.

Ferretti has, after all, not only styled the cascading tresses of the Princess of Wales, but he’s also worked with Hollywood’s biggest names, like Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Lawrence, to name a few.

The hairstylist to the stars, who has 50 years of experience in the field and also comes from a family boasting three generations of hairdressers, operates the his eponymous line of haircare products, as well as the Rossano Ferretti HairSpa, which is present in more than 20 locations worldwide. In April, he opened the hair spa at Rosewood Hong Kong’s Asaya Spa, which is the brand’s second location in Asia, besides Bali. The hair spa offers styling, colouring services, as well as a range of treatments.

To mark the opening at Asaya Spa, Tatler sits down with Feretti to ask him for haircare and styling tips—and what his advice is on controlling hair frizz in Hong Kong’s humidity.

Less is more in haircare

“Start by understanding and respecting your hair’s natural texture”, says Ferretti. Instead of trying to radically change it, use products and techniques that enhance it. For example, for wavy or curly hair, Ferretti recommends his brand’s Favoloso Perfect Curls Enhancing Serum—they define the curls more without weighing them down.

Less is more with products, he adds: use the highest-quality products you can find, but use them sparingly. A small amount of a good, rich serum can work wonders with controlling frizz.

“Avoid vigorous rubbing with a towel after washing your hair, as it can cause breakage and frizz. Instead, gently pat your hair dry with a microfibre towel or an old T-shirt, which is gentler on the hair cuticle. If time allows, let your hair air dry naturally.

Protect your hair from environmental stressors such as sun, pollution and humidity. Use products with UV protection and antioxidants.

Lastly, when using heat styling tools, always protect your hair with a heat protectant. This is a must”, says Ferretti.

“The high humidity in Hong Kong can lead to hair problems like frizz and dryness, so choose a proper haircare routine that is personalised to your hair type,” says Ferretti.

Those dealing with dryness and frizz can use a lightweight hair mask, like Rossano Ferretti Dolce Nourishing Mask. Additionally, incorporating a leave-in conditioner or an anti-frizz serum can further protect the hair from moisture in the air, keeping it manageable and glossy.

Haircare mistakes to avoid

“The most common haircare mistake that people make is over-washing their hair”, says Ferretti. “This can strip the hair of its natural oils.”

While many people pay attention to hair, but forget to take care of the scalp. Use scalp oils to strengthen the hair from its roots.

Another mistake is using too much product, and also the wrong type of product, which can weigh the hair down and diminish its natural vitality.

Lastly, neglecting regular trims leads to split ends and uneven hair growth, affecting overall hair health.

Ideal haircut by face shape

“When it comes to haircuts, one size doesn’t fit all, even for similar face shapes. One needs to consider the natural flow and movement of the hair, ensuring the haircut complements the unique facial structure and accentuates one’s natural beauty.

With the right haircut, one can also add volume to the hair without taking drastic measures. What’s important is to invest in the right haircut and then to maintain the groomed look with the right products,” says Ferretti.
