BEIHAI, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Weizhou Island, located in the Beibu Gulf, is China's youngest volcanic island. Bryde's whales, a national first-class protected aquatic animal mainly living in tropical and subtropical waters, are now frequently spotted preying on fish in the waters near Weizhou Island in the Beibu Gulf.
Whales normally migrate after food resources, and the nutrient-rich waters brought to the islet by ocean circulation in the Beibu Gulf continue to attract Bryde's whales. In addition, due to its diverse marine ecosystems and less disturbance caused by coastal economic activities, the gulf's ecological diversity has maintained a relatively good state, providing a livable habitat for Bryde's whales.
